Quest House, a return to the projects of old. The conversion and refurbishment of a former office building. This time in Croydon, next to East Croydon Station. The beginnings of a much wider regeneration of the Croydon Area, which has now begun. The project takes on many lessons learnt over the years. The combination of making the best of the existing building and adding to with imaginative layouts that allow flexibility of tenure and good quality materials to ensure durability and longevity.

2011 Livity

Social Housing has certainly changed since we started out in practice.

Then, RSL’s provided affordable rent housing. Now with the reduction in grant and the need to generate revenue to expand, shared ownership and private sale seem to be the preferrred model of the RSL.  At livity we have a row of terrace houses that on the open market would sell for £1m. Once upon a time any family houses would be affordable rent, now private sale. We suggested if they were to be private sale, they should be exemplars. The houses have a range of spaces, filled with natural light. All the ingredients that would appeal to a home owner in the current market and help enhance value.

2010 Bright Buttons Nursery

A departure form architecture when we decided to open a day nursery on the ground floor of our offices. The enterprise has proved to be a successful one, thanks to a dedicated team. Experiences learnt as a governor at an infant school and support of a good friend and client from the education sector has certainly helped it succeed. Watch this space for further expansion.

2009 Upper Clapton Road

One that got away, largely due to the time.

Planning was granted for this scheme on the former tram depot site in hackney, but never built.  The scheme was presented at WAF in 2010. It could have provided more than 80 homes and upgraded B1 space in the former tram shed, with residential inserted above preserving the building and taking on ideas learnt at Morris House (2003).

2008 Belval, Luxembourg

This was a competition entry for a new engineering faculty in Belval, Luxembourg.

We made it onto the shortlist and exhibition in Belval. We focused not only on the teaching spaces but also the spaces between, taking on board current thinking that explored how people might learn in a digital environment. We looked at creating break out spaces, learning hubs. A great scheme, unfortunately not the winning scheme.

2007 Abbot Data Store, Harlow

This project (Roman House) is the larger version of a warehouse created for the same client just north of the Kings Cross redevelopment. There, we were extending an existing facility, here, we were building new.  It was an opportunity to move away form housing and examine the programme requirements for a completely different building typology and how such a large building might be phased.

2006 Science Alive, Harlow

A new exhibition and teaching space on a very tight budget within a newly built sport centre.

The scheme was enjoyable as we had to make the most of the very little funding available. Credit has to go to the client for working so hard to bring the project to fruition.

2005 Downham Road

One that got away.

The site sits at the top of the Kingsland Basin (Kings Wharf 1999). Our client tried to purchase the site.  Had he been successful, we had developed a mixed use scheme which would have met our clients requirements and those of the planning authority.  Namely, to continue the redevelopment of the basin while opening up views and access to the basin from Downham Road.  It would have been a great addition to the basin and streetscape. Unfortunately, what’s there makes little or no connection between the basin and street.

2004 Manor Farm, Reading

A project that could have been the start of much larger urban developments.

The original intention was to produce something different and special in Reading. Unfortunately as the scheme developed the client felt a need to water down the scheme, to a point where we were not the architects to continue with it.  Looking at what has been built I think there are still elements of the masterplan in place.

2003 Morris House

Morris House forms part of a much larger development that includes Issigonis House. The scheme as the names suggest have links back to the early days of the Morris Minor. Morris House is the reworking of a former coachworks into a mixed use building providing residential and B1 space. Due to the buildings historic past and local listing the building was retained and four floors of residential inserted into the existing building, creating a contrast between the old and the new. The new building incorporates aspects explored at Wenlock (2000). The communal route at the top of the building is an open street off which single and duplex units are accessed. Light form this street filters down into the corridor below.
